What is the G.M.A.T?

( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )

The G.M.A.T (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a 3½-hour standardized exam designed to predict how test takers will perform academically in M.B.A (Masters in Business Administration) programs. G.M.A.T scores are used by graduate business schools to make entry decisions. ( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )

You might sometimes see the G.M.A.T referred to as the G.M.A.T CAT. The acronym CAT stands for Computer Adaptive Test. Actually, only two of the exam’s four sections (Quantitative and Verbal) are computer-adaptive, meaning that during those sections only the test adapts to your ability level as you go.

The G.M.A.T is administered only by computer now, except that in certain remote locations outside North America a paper-based version of the exam is available instead. (Since you’re reading this on the Web, in all likelihood the computer-based G.M.A.T is available where you are.)

Who is responsible for the design and administration of the G.M.A.T?

( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )

The G.M.A.T is developed by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council), which determines what kinds of skills the G.M.A.T should measure — and how it should measure them. Another organization actually develops the test questions, administers the test, and reports test scores to the schools — all at the behest of GMAC.

What cognitive skills, or abilities, does the G.M.A.T measure?

( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )

The G.M.A.T seeks to measure four broad skill areas: analytical writing, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and integrated reasoning (which embraces analytical, quantitative, and verbal reasoning). The exam gauges these skills through four discrete components, presented in the order listed here: ( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )

  1. a 30-minute Analytical Writing Assessment (one writing task)
  2. a 30-minute Integrated Reasoning section (12 multiple-choice questions, most of which are multi-part)
  3. a 75-minute Quantitative section (37 multiple-choice questions)
  4. a 75-minute Verbal section (41 multiple-choice questions) ( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )

How important are G.M.A.T scores in the B-school entrance process?

( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )

Each graduate business school develops and implements its own policy concerning the use of G.M.A.T scores in making entrance decisions. Many schools screen applicants by combining G.M.A.T scores and undergraduate GPA (each school determining for itself their relative weight), then ranking all applicants in their initial pool accordingly.

In addition — especially after the initial screening of applicants — entry officials consider subjective factors such as work and other relevant experience, recommendation letters, reports of personal interviewers, and personal statements (application essays). In making difficult decisions between two or more similarly qualified candidates, entry officials rely less on G.M.A.T scores and GPA and far more on these other, more subjective factors.

G.M.A.T v/s CAT

( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )

  • The decision to take a G.M.A.T or the CAT is a very important one has it can not only open a lot of doors of opportunity but also save a lot of time and money. The CAT exam was initially introduced as an entrance exam for the IIM institutions but over the years this popularity has also faded with a lot of institutes /universities now preferring the G.M.A.T scores over the CAT. ( MBA Admission in Management Quota at Top 50 GMAT Colleges )
  • While CAT is mostly accepted by IIMs, G.M.A.T is accepted by 90 B Schools in India.
  • M.A.T is accepted by best M.B.A programs that don’t require an applicant to have work experience: IMT Ghaziabad, Narsi Monjee, IIM Kozikote, ISB, Great Lakes
  • M.A.T is also the premier option for best M.B.A programs such as ISB, IIM PGPX, MDI, XLRI and many more that require students to have work experience
  • The no. of B-schools accepting G.M.A.T scores is higher than any other test being accepted in India. This means that any of the students applying to institutes through G.M.A.T across the nation has more no. of leading B-schools to choose from than someone taking any other competitive M.B.A aptitude test.
